Your persistence and patience has saved a lot of un-necessary shuffling of equipment, IT staff time and unrealized (future) gains of payroll staff time. It’s my opinion that companies which were able to survive the recent economic issues and flourish, can attribute much of their survival to excellent customer service like yours.

What Your Boss Really Wants from You

Posted Mar 13, 2017

Keeping your boss happy is key to your professional survival. But all performance measures are not listed in your job description. Meet the following often-unspoken expectations, and you’ll be an MVP on your boss’ team.

  • Value - Are you more than a warm body that fills a chair? Your team should be better for having you, as an individual, on it.
  • Support - It’s your job to make your case: explain, encourage, persuade, or convince your boss about a new policy or changed strategic approach.
  • Positivity - Your boss wants you to be pleasant to be around. Engage with your boss and colleagues; smile, listen, make eye contact.
  • Initiative - Don’t wait to be told to do something, and don’t wait to be asked about an idea. Bring forward your insights about improving the company and your role in it.
  • Excellence - Always give your best effort for a high-quality result, whatever form that may take for your company. Don’t phone it in.
  • Humility - Ask for help when you need it—if a project is confusing, get clarification. Also, cop to your mistakes and reinforce the lessons learned.
  • Solutions - A boss is busy and stressed. They aren’t interested in being the referee for every dispute or master of every issue. When you come forward with a problem, be sure you also bring a potential solution.
